![]() The 1.8 release did make an actual change that made all ores more common they increased the size of all ores by one, resulting in an approximate 20% increase in ore abundance ( from about 3.1 to 3.7 per chunk for diamond, which is still less than what pre-Beta 1.8 had, about 4 per chunk). Otherwise, they reversed the direction veins "grow" in from up to down in Beta 1.8, which is why they generate 4 layers deeper down despite the range always being 0-15, this change also only affected the amount exposed in caves (same density on layers 12 and below). The reason why diamond is popularly thought to be rarer in old versions is because of a bug in ore generation which was fixed in Beta 1.6 they improperly rounded towards 0 instead of flooring the coordinates, leading to less ores (of all types) in negative quadrants, most pronounced in -x, -z while +x, +z had the correct amount, so if you knew this (many probably didn't) you could just mine in that quadrant. Īside from a change to the way veins generate and a bugfix the generation of diamond hasn't been changed since at least early Beta ( Beta 1.1_02 source all the values (range, count, vein size) match those in the source for 1.6.4, and the ore generation code itself (WorldGenMinable) is nearly identical).
